Port Harcourt Garden City Carnival Returns With Record Lineup

The Garden City Carnival returns to Port Harcourt this December with what organisers are calling its most ambitious lineup yet, featuring performers spanning highlife, afrobeats and traditional masquerade troupes from across Rivers, Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom States.

Now in its second decade, the carnival has grown from a local street festival into one of the region's biggest cultural exports, drawing visitors from across Nigeria and the diaspora. This year's edition will place a heavier emphasis on homegrown Niger Delta talent, according to the festival's creative director, who said the goal is to "let the world see that our region's culture is not only oil rigs and pipelines."

Alongside the main carnival parade, organisers have announced a new fringe programme of gallery exhibitions, a food village showcasing Niger Delta cuisine, and a youth talent showcase aimed at discovering new musicians and dancers from host communities.

Local hospitality businesses say bookings are already picking up ahead of the festival dates, with several hotels reporting near-full occupancy projections for the carnival weekend. State tourism officials have described the event as a key plank of efforts to diversify the region's economy beyond oil.

Tickets for ticketed carnival events are expected to go on sale next month, with a portion of proceeds reportedly earmarked for a youth arts scholarship fund.
