The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is intensifying calls for economic diversification in the Niger Delta, with tourism identified as one of the sectors capable of reducing the region's dependence on crude oil.
The commission has backed initiatives aimed at developing tourism opportunities, including efforts connected to traditional communities and cultural destinations.
The move comes amid growing calls for the Niger Delta to develop alternative economic sectors capable of creating jobs and generating sustainable income.
Stakeholders say the region's rivers, mangrove forests, cultural heritage, festivals and historic communities could become major tourism assets if properly developed.
Niger Delta Reporters believes diversification remains critical to creating a stronger and more sustainable Niger Delta economy.
