Joint Task Force Repels Pirate Attack on Cargo Vessel Near Bonny Channel

A cargo vessel travelling through the Bonny Channel narrowly escaped a pirate attack early Saturday morning after Joint Task Force (JTF) patrol boats intercepted a speedboat carrying armed men approaching the ship, according to a statement from the Nigerian Navy's Eastern Naval Command.

The vessel's crew triggered a distress signal after spotting the approaching boat, prompting a rapid response from a nearby naval patrol that had been repositioned as part of increased security around the channel following a string of incidents earlier in the year. No casualties were reported, and the suspects reportedly abandoned pursuit and fled into the creeks.

"This is the kind of response time we have been working toward," a Navy spokesperson said, noting that the corridor handles a significant share of crude and cargo traffic in and out of the eastern Niger Delta. Shipping companies have previously flagged the channel as a high-risk zone requiring armed escort for larger vessels.

Maritime security analysts say incidents in the corridor have declined compared to the same period last year, crediting a combination of increased naval patrols, community intelligence-sharing arrangements and improved vessel-tracking technology, though they caution that pirate groups have historically adapted their routes and tactics in response to enforcement.

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) said it would review the incident as part of its ongoing assessment of the Deep Blue security architecture covering the Gulf of Guinea.
