A former presidential candidate, Yahaya Ndu, has called on the Federal Government to legalise artisanal or cottage refineries operating in the Niger Delta.
Ndu argued that bringing such refineries into the formal economy could help address Nigeria's energy challenges while creating opportunities for people in oil-producing communities.
The proposal comes amid continuing debates over illegal refining, crude oil theft, environmental pollution and unemployment across the Niger Delta.
Supporters of formalisation could argue that regulation would allow government authorities to establish safety and environmental standards while providing economic opportunities.
However, such a policy would also require strong regulatory controls to prevent environmental degradation and unsafe refining practices.
Niger Delta Reporters will continue following the debate over the future of refining in the Niger Delta.
