The boat ride into Nembe takes just under two hours from the nearest jetty, gliding past mangroves that seem to close in and open up in the same breath.
What struck me most wasn't the well-documented environmental strain on the creeks, but the quiet resilience of the town itself — markets that open before sunrise, a football pitch that fills up every evening regardless of the tide.
I came looking for a story about oil infrastructure. I left with a longer list of stories about the people who live alongside it.
